Crime Coalition Earmark

Justice System Professional Development –

Raising the level of professionalism through education is a key component to restoring faith in the criminal justice system. Providing funding for training has been a Police and Justice Foundation tradition. In 2007 the Foundation was able to partner with the New Orleans Crime Coalition and make the case there was a strong need for career development training within the criminal justice system. A grant of $275,000 in professional development funding was received for distribution by the Foundation through the Coalition as a part of a congressional earmark. These funds will be passed through at no charge and paid directly to vendors by the Foundation. Attempts to network and leverage these funds in partnership with other area criminal justice agencies are also being made to maximize their impact. Homicide training for multiple agencies has been conducted as a model.

The NOPJF continues to also sponsor a number of training initiatives each year specifically directed to NOPD officers and their attendance at a wide variety of in-town or out-of-town seminars. These efforts supplement tight NOPD training budgets. The District Attorney has also received training support.
