Tragedy Fund

NOPD Tragedy Fund -

The Police and Justice Foundation acts as fiduciary agent for the NOPD Tragedy Fund. This fund is reserved for officers and other NOPD employees who experience a significant “hardship”. A hardship is currently defined as loss of life or significant injury as determined by the Tragedy Fund Board. Included in the agreement is the participation of the NOPJF President and one NOPJF Board Member as Tragedy Fund Board Members. The Tragedy Fund Board also includes three representatives associated with the NOPD plus a Chairman and Treasurer.

NOPJF receives all funds as the fiduciary agent from a variety of sources (about $40,000 annually) including payroll deduction ($1 per pay period or $26 annually to be a member). Distribution is made at the discretion of the Tragedy Fund Board based on the fund bylaws. The bylaws were developed by NOPJF and approved by the Tragedy Fund Board of Directors. All employees of the department are eligible to be members of the Tragedy Fund.

Since it rebirth in 2003 over $130,000 has been paid out to seriously injuries officers or their families. Current maximum payout is $7500 within 48 hours of an event. It is hoped in the near future the maximum will be raised to $10,000.
